Šebrle wins with an Olympic record (0)

World record holder Roman Sebrle (CZE) won the Olympic gold medal and set an Olympic record of 8893 points.

Although Sebrle was the number one pick to win before the Games, he did not get his gold easily. In fact, he trailed Dmitry Karpov (KAZ) at the end of the first day. Bryan Clay (USA), who took the silver medal with a personal best of 8820 points and Karpov who scored 8725 points for an Asian record and a bronze medal, challenged the Czech well throughout the second day.

Karpov had his bronze medal secured being more than 100 points behind Clay and almost 400 points ahead of Chiel Warners (NED) in fourth place.

Tom Pappas (USA), the 2003 World Champion, still had a medal in sight before the second day, but dropped out of the pole vault due to an injury in his left foot.

Dean Macey (GBR) duplicated his fourth place from Sydney 2000, scoring a season's best of 8414 points to mark a remarkable comeback for he Briton since his last major championships in Edmonton 2001. Warners was fifth with 8343 points, a season's best for him as well. The Sydney Olympic Champion Erki Nool (EST) scored 8235 points to finish eighth.
