First Indian to pass 7500 points in Decathlon (0)

Mar 05, 2006

Decathlete Jora Singh, representing Haryana state, garnered a respectable 7502 points to successfully defend his title in the Federation Cup senior athletic championships at Jawaharlal Stadium.

Employed with the Border Security Force, Jora Singh won last year’s FedCup at the same venue with a tally of 7120 pts. It was followed by a second place finish in the first-ever National Combined Events Challenge at Chennai, where he helped compatriot Kulwinder Singh to break the 33-year-old national mark in this event. During the Asian Championships at Incheon he could not cope-up with the pressure and finished a disappointing sixth. He was second again in the nationals at Hyderabad during November last.

Jora opened his campaign in 2006 with a winning note. On the first day he had shown only a little improvement on his personal bests in high and long jumps, which left no signal of a record attempt. By contrast Jora performed well with PB marks in all the five events on the second day.

At the end he had eclipsed Kulwinder’s national record of 7325 points set at Chennai in 2005. Pulimootil Joseph Vinod who finished second also bettered the previous mark with 7382 points, while Jora’s team-mate Ram Niwas took the third spot with a tally of 6997 pts.
