Dean Macey Eager to Seize Gold (0)

Aug 04, 2006

According to British decathlete Dean Macey, Czech Roman Sebrle is the favourite of European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. Macey thinks that he may have his say in deciding the fate of gold only if Sebrle gets unlucky.

Macey admits: "Roman is the clear favourite for gold, but if he makes a mistake, then I could win it. Roman is a good couple of hundred points ahead of everybody else. Anyone able to finish in front of him will win the competition, but after all, we all start on zero points."

Macey thinks that his advantage over the reigning Olympic and European champion and world-record holder Sebrle is his mental energy. The self-confident Macey says: "I don’t think there is anyone in the world who compares with me for mental preparation."

“Unless I'm competing against a robot, I've got a chance. I consider myself one of the favourites to win a medal. I hope I don't jinx myself, but I'm very healthy at the moment," says the multi-athlete, who got silver at the World Championships seven years ago.

The 28-year-old Macey won the gold medal with 8143 points at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March. He was victorious despite tearing his hamstring three weeks before the start of the event.
